Goals of website redesign

Apex CoVantage specializes in Digital Accessibility, Data Science, and Digital Publishing empowering organizations to build inclusive experiences, unlock data-driven insights, and streamline content workflows.

Apex CoVantage needed to modernize its digital presence. This required a website that:

Strengthened their visual identity with an accessible and cohesive design.

Organized content in a clear, structured manner for easy navigation.

Implemented solutions to enhance usability for all users.

Expanded audience reach and reinforced their leadership in digital accessibility.

This posed a critical question: Are we truly showcasing our expertise in accessibility, or are we unintentionally making it difficult for users to engage with our content?

Approach

Goal Definition

Studying top industry leaders, understanding how they implement accessibility best practices and enhance user engagement.

Once we identified key accessibility gaps, how did that shape our approach to making Apex CoVantage’s website fully inclusive? How has the new accessibility-first approach changed the user experience and reinforced Apex CoVantage’s leadership in digital accessibility?

Measure- Apply - Test- Iterate

Identified the most crucial accessibility elements to incorporate, focusing on usability, interactions and content clarity.

Simplified their service positioning to communicate expertise in Data Science, Accessibility and Digital Publication without overwhelming users.

Implemented ARIA labels and keyboard-friendly navigation to enhance accessibility for all users.

Solution

Accessibility-driven design approach

We implemented a user-centric design philosophy that prioritized usability, functionality, and inclusivity while maintaining Apex CoVantage’s brand essence. This involved:

Refining the brand’s visual identity for improved clarity and accessibility.

Creating structured layouts that efficiently presented a large amount of content.

Structured layouts that efficiently presented a large amount of content.

Enhanced navigation & User flow

To improve accessibility and streamline the user journey, we:

Redesigned the navigation structure for intuitive browsing and easy access to key resources.

Made the navigation bar 100% accessible, ensuring full keyboard and screen reader compatibility.

Optimized the information architecture, allowing users to find services and insights effortlessly.

Performance optimization for accessibility & SEO

To maximize impact, we focused on:

Implementing ARIA labels and leveraging Webflow’s built-in accessibility features like form autofill attributes and a well-structured CMS.

Adding descriptive alt text to key images and background video controls (play/pause) to meet accessibility and SEO standards.

Enhancing the resource hub with structured content and better categorization for improved discoverability.

Conducting final testing with the NVDA screen reader and optimizing the website for lightning-fast load times (< 0.5 seconds) and higher search rankings.

People using screen readers hear these are decorative so they know they aren't missing any important information
Providing play/pause controls for moving elements, like animations or carousels, significantly benefits individuals with disabilities and those who find movement distracting
Autocomplete enhances the user experience for everyone, especially those with disabilities, by making form filling easier and more efficient
NVDA is a free and open-source screen reader that provides detailed spoken feedback to help visually impaired users interact with their computers.
The DigitalA11Y extension is helpful for identifying missing ARIA labels, landmarks, and alt text for images
Alt text makes content accessible for screen readers and improves SEO by helping search engines understand images

Component-based building

By using a component-based approach, we ensured consistency, flexibility, and easy content updates across the site. This allowed Apex CoVantage’s team to:

Modify sections effortlessly without affecting site integrity.

Optimize workflows for content managers and marketing teams.

Scale the website efficiently without requiring extensive development efforts.
